Overview
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a long-term lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. It includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Symptoms
- Ongoing cough, often with mucus
- Shortness of breath, especially with activity
- Wheezing
- Frequent chest infections
Causes
Most often caused by long-term exposure to cigarette smoke; also air pollution, occupational dusts and fumes, and a rare genetic cause (alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency).

- Chronic bronchitis
- Emphysema
Diagnosis
Diagnosed with spirometry (a breathing test), symptoms, and exposure history.
Treatment
Quitting smoking is the most important step. Treatment includes inhaled bronchodilators, steroids, pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen when needed, and vaccines.
Living with it
- Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke
- Get flu and pneumonia vaccines
- Take inhaled medicines as prescribed
- Stay active with pulmonary rehabilitation
- Avoid air pollution and lung irritants
Complications
- Frequent lung infections
- Heart problems
- Respiratory failure
- Depression and anxiety
