Overview
HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. Without treatment it can lead to AIDS, but with modern medicines people with HIV live long, healthy lives.
Symptoms
- Flu-like illness soon after infection (fever, sore throat, rash, fatigue)
- Often no symptoms for years
- Later, weight loss, fever, or infections if untreated
Causes
A virus spread through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk - most often through sex or sharing needles.
Types
- HIV-1 (most common worldwide)
- HIV-2 (mainly West Africa)
Diagnosis
Diagnosed with blood tests (antibody/antigen tests, and viral load).
Treatment
Daily antiretroviral therapy (ART) keeps the virus at an undetectable level. Undetectable = untransmittable (U=U).
Living with it
- Take ART every day as prescribed
- Keep all medical appointments
- Practice safer sex and use PrEP if at risk
- Get recommended vaccines
- Seek support for mental health and stigma
Complications
- AIDS (advanced untreated HIV)
- Opportunistic infections
- Higher risk of certain cancers and heart disease
