When to seek help
See a doctor for joint pain that limits daily activities or does not improve; seek urgent care for a joint that becomes suddenly red, hot, or severely swollen.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, contact your local emergency services immediately.
Overview
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It happens when the protective cartilage at the ends of bones wears down over time, causing pain and stiffness.
Symptoms
- Joint pain that worsens with activity
- Stiffness, especially in the morning or after rest
- Swelling
- Reduced flexibility and a grating sensation
Causes
Mostly age and wear over time, plus joint injury, excess weight, genetics, and repeated stress on a joint.
Types
- Primary osteoarthritis (age-related wear)
- Secondary osteoarthritis (from injury or another condition)
Diagnosis
Diagnosed by symptoms, exam, and imaging (X-ray); there is no single blood test.
Treatment
Exercise and weight management are core. Pain relievers, physical therapy, and sometimes joint injections or surgery help when needed.

- Stay active with low-impact exercise such as walking or swimming
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Strengthen the muscles around the joint
- Use heat, cold, and assistive devices as needed
Complications
- Chronic pain
- Reduced mobility
